Easy Tips to Go Green

MF Blossoms

Happy Earth Day, everyone! In honor of our beautiful planet, here’s a list of 30 simple ideas to “green” up your life and reduce your environmental impact. I’m always amazed at how easy it is to make small changes that can add up to a big global difference. Even if you only adopt a few of these tips, you’ll still be helping to make tomorrow a more beautiful place.

In Your Home

  • Switch to reusable market bags for your grocery shopping.
  • Replace burnt out light bulbs with compact fluorescent lightbulbs (cfl).
  • Install a digital, programmable thermostat.
  • In warmer months, use a clothesline instead of a dryer.
  • Plant a tree in your yard.
  • Wrap your water heater in an insulation blanket.
  • Use the energy saving settings on your appliances, especially your dishwasher.
  • Unplug cell phone and computer chargers from the wall when not in use.
  • Fill a plastic bottle with sand or rocks, seal it, and put it in your toilet tank to use less water per flush.
  • Make a commitment to have one meat-free meal per week.
  • Before you throw something away, ask yourself if it can be used for anything else. Try to give each item (whatever it is) at least two different purposes before putting it in a landfill. Use it up and wear it out!

In Your Car

  • Check your tire pressure weekly for proper inflation.
  • Make a commitment to walk or bike to places that are within 3 miles of home.
  • Start a carpool.
  • Telecommute from home to work whenever possible.
  • Keep your car tuned up, and when it’s time for a new car, get something more fuel efficient.

In Your Neighborhood and Community

  • Spend time in local parks, nature preserves, or beaches.
  • Recycle, recycle, recycle!
  • Organize a litter patrol to clean up local roads and highways.
  • Participate in city clean-up days and green waste pick-ups.
  • Plant a garden.
  • Start a compost pile.
  • Become a guerilla gardener and start seedbombing to beautify abandoned, vacant places. (The kids will love this one!)
  • Take the kids to visit a local landfill to learn about what happens to garbage after it leaves our homes.
  • Encourage community leaders to adopt energy saving practices in schools and government offices.

In Your Spending

  • Switch to paperless billing whenever possible and use your bank’s online bill pay system.
  • Shop local farmers markets.
  • Opt out of pre-screened credit card offers.
  • Before you buy something, consider checking Freecycle first for a used alternative.
  • Avoid buying products with heavy packaging.

The Best April Fool’s Pranks

Friday is April Fool’s Day, so now is the time to summon your inner prankster and plan some mischief. Here are some fun (and harmless) tricks to play on your friends and family:

  • Place inconspicuous strips of bubble wrap underneath the toilet seat. The next person to sit down will get a surprising POP!
  • Find a cake-shaped dish or box and frost it with a thick layer of frosting and wait for someone to dig in.
  • Hide the speaker side of a baby monitor in a room where someone is working or relaxing. Using the microphone side in another room, make strange noises periodically that get louder and louder.
  • Go into the settings on someone’s email and change the language preference.
  • Glue a quarter to the ground and watch people try to pick it up.
  • Tape the underside sensor of a computer mouse.
  • Empty the dresser drawers and put them back in upside down.
  • Put a raisin in the toothpaste tube. It will look like a bug when it gets squeezed out!
  • Remove the cap on the shampoo bottle and cover the opening with plastic wrap before putting the cap back on.
  • Use the iPhone App, “Dude, Your Car!” to manipulate a photo of a friend’s car into looking wrecked, dinged, and dented.
  • Switch the “Pull” and “Push” signs on a door.
  • Affix a strong magnet to the bottom of an empty coffee cup. Place the cup on the roof of your car above the driver’s door and drive around town.
  • Replace the sports section of the day’s newspaper with the sports pages from last week.
  • Stuff cotton balls in the toes of your family’s shoes.
  • Completely fill the interior of someone’s car with balloons.
  • When the owner is not around, turn backpacks and purses completely inside out and return all the contents.
  • Stand outside a window while someone is watching TV and with a universal remote, randomly change the channel and volume.
  • Swap the entire contents of one kitchen cabinet with that of another.
  • Put salt all over the household toothbrushes.
  • Make “juice” out of water and food coloring and serve it with breakfast.
  • Switch the book covers on your kids’ text books.
  • Make caramel-dipped apples with onions instead.
  • Hard boil all the eggs, then request an omelette.
  • Hide gummi worms in whatever you’re serving for dinner.
  • Take the lazy approach and hint that you’re planning a great April Fool’s day prank, and then don’t do anything. It will drive them nuts trying to anticipate!

Spring Cleaning Checklist

To some, spring cleaning is a joyous ritual and to others, an overwhelming pursuit. Wherever you fall on the spectrum, here’s a tip-filled checklist that will keep you on track and ready to start your season with shining success.

  • Work in one area. Whether it’s one drawer or one room, stay in one place and see your project finished through. It will give you a feeling of satisfaction and motivate you for the next.
  • Open the windows and let the house breathe.
  • Clean top to bottom. Be efficient and start at the top of a room and work your way down to the ground.
  • Affix an old t-shirt to the end of your mop and gather cobwebs from ceiling corners.
  • Affix a feather duster to your broom handle to dust chandeliers and light fixtures.
  • Dust the top of ceiling fans. You’ll be shocked how much dust has built up in the off season.
  • Dust the tops of door jams, cupboards and picture frames.
  • Use a hose attachment to vacuum the nooks and crannies of couches and chairs. Don’t forget to vacuum the upholstery too.
  • Use a Magic Eraser or similar product to clean scuffs off of walls.
  • Wipe down light switches and door knobs.
  • Wipe down baseboards and touch up with paint where necessary.
  • Clear everything off kitchen countertops and scrub with soap and water.
  • Wipe down cupboard doors and shelves.
  • Apply a coat of sealant to granite or stone countertops.
  • Clean out the fridge. Toss out old food and use up food that is still good.
  • Organize the pantry. Pull items with approaching expiration dates to the front.
  • Clean the oven. Put a fresh layer of tin foil in the bottom to make cleanup easy.
  • Purge old paints, cleansers, and chemicals and research where they can be disposed of locally.
  • For a foolproof window washing solution, use 1 gallon distilled water with 2 cups rubbing alcohol, 1/2 cup ammonia and 1 teaspoon Dawn dishsoap.  Spray on and wipe clean with a cheesecloth or squeegee.
  • Hang floor rugs and runners outside on a railing and beat with a rod for several minutes. This will loosen deep particles that breakdown fibers. Transfer rugs inside and vacuum immediately.
  • Scrub the grill, refill the propane, and light the BBQ. Allow it to sit on high heat for at least 30 minutes to burn off any residue.
  • Change furnace filters and water filters.
  • Check with your city or waste management and take advantage of excess waste or green waste pickup days.
  • Invest in a compost bin for the backyard. Keep a smaller container under the sink for pieces of fruit, vegetables, egg shells, and coffee grinds. Once the smaller container is full, transfer it to the larger container.
  • Wash blankets and throws before storing for the season.
  • Wash winter coats and snow gear before storing.
  • Spray out garbage cans with the hose and allow to dry completely in the sun.
  • Sweep garage.
  • Organize a neighborhood yard sale. Donate the money to a good cause.

Spring Staycation Ideas

MF Umbrellas If a weeklong trip to the Bahamas isn’t in the budget for your upcoming Spring Break, why not consider a staycation at home? I promise, you can have the time of your life without boarding a plane, train, or automobile. On second thought, you are going to need that automobile, but only one tank of gas. Here’s are my tips for a fabulous stay-at-home sabbatical:

Plan an exotic menu. You’re not going somewhere exotic, but that doesn’t mean you can’t have food that is. Make a menu plan for the week with your favorite ethnic foods, but leave one or two nights open for eating out.

Tourist in your own town. See your area with new eyes, as if you were visiting it for the first time and wanted to hit all the highlights in your short stay. Chances are, you have a long list of places–museums, parks, historical sites–you plan to visit “someday.” Guess what? It’s someday!

Don’t forget your camera. You wouldn’t forget your camera for a vacation, so don’t even think about forgetting it for your staycation. You’re making memories, so preserve them forever with your photos.

Book a local hotel room. Spend one night at a local hotel room and enjoy all the perks. (Get a great rate on Priceline.) Don’t forget your swimsuits for the swimming pool and jacuzzi. For a romantic getaway, choose a local Bed and Breakfast instead.

Enjoy a midday matinee. When’s the last time you spent a day at the movies? Sounds indulgent, doesn’t it? That’s what vacations are all about. Treat yourself to a weekday trip to the movies for a double feature. And while you’re at it, get extra butter on that popcorn! For something truly different, find a theater that shows only independent or foreign films.

Unplug. Get away from the everyday stress of your modern life. Put a vacation message on your email, turn the ringer off your cell phone, and leave the TV on standby. Check email and messages once a day.

Wake up naturally. Before you go to bed each night, open the curtains or blinds, allowing yourself to wake naturally with sunlight in the morning. No alarm clocks allowed. It’s one of the best feelings in the world.

Try these tips and you’ll return to your regular life relaxed, recharged, and ready to go. Bon voyage!

Community Supported Agriculture

If you don’t grow your own vegetables, raise your own chickens, or maintain your own fruit orchard, the next best option is to participate in a local CSA or Community Supported Agriculture. I participated in one last year and absolutely loved it. Essentially, CSA programs allow you to buy a “share” of a local farmer’s crop in advance. Then, throughout the growing season (May through October) you receive a weekly assortment of fresh fruits, vegetables, and buttery farm-fresh eggs.

To get involved, search for a participating farms in your area. Local Harvest is an amazing database of farmers nationwide. Simply plug in your zip code and research the farms in your area. Each farmer sets his own price per share (usually $200 – $600), plus his farming practices (organic or pesticide-free), typical crops, and delivery/pickup options. If you have questions, you can contact a farmer directly.  If you’re interested in my experience, here are a few highlights:

Variety, variety, variety. I could not believe the incredible variety of vegetables and fruit I received each week in my large laundry-sized basket, all of which had been picked within 24 hours. Fresh beets, asparagus, carrots, squashes, melons, berries, potatoes, mushrooms, onions, herbs, and several varieties of lettuce were among my favorites. I met vegetables I’d never heard of before and learned about different varieties of my favorites. It felt like an exciting surprise every week.

Convenience. My share was delivered to my doorstep each week because several of my neighbors also participated in shares from the same farmer. Normally, our farmer offered a local pickup spot, but because there were several of us, it was worth his time to deliver to us directly. It was ridiculously convenient. If you have several neighbors interested, you might approach your local farmers and see if they’d do the same.

Value. My share, paid in advance, worked out to about $17.50 per week for a laundry-sized basket chock full of fruits, veggies, and a dozen fresh eggs. If I bought the same items at my local grocery store, I would have easily paid double, if not triple, the amount. Plus, most of the food at my grocery store is not nearly as fresh and isn’t likely to have been grown locally.

Freshness. The food I received was so fresh, colorful, and flavorful, it put to shame every other bite of store-bought food I’d ever purchased. And because it hadn’t spent weeks traveling to get to me, it lasted forever. I had a head of lettuce that lasted nearly four weeks without wilting—amazing! And don’t even get me started on fresh eggs. There isn’t enough space here to contain my love.

Education. Not only did I get to know new foods, I got to know my farmer’s family. We’d chat a bit at each delivery and I’d get information about the food I received as well as cooking tips, recipes, and insight about how farming works and when certain vegetables are in peak season. Most of the farmers offer “farm days” where share owners can come and tour the farm, meet the staff and animals, and see their crops growing right before their eyes. It’s a great activity for kids.

Unbelievable flavor. You probably already know the enormous difference between the flavor of a garden grown tomato and one from the grocery store. Now, imagine that same difference with every other fruit and vegetable you eat throughout the season. There simply is no comparison.

CSAs are also a great way to support your local economy. Small farms are becoming more rare, so programs like these keep them in business. Additionally, small farms use little or no chemicals and hormones to treat the food. It’s better for your body and the environment. And speaking of the environment, the food isn’t crossing countries or oceans to reach you, which saves noxious fumes from boats, planes, and trucks during transportation. It really is win/win for everyone involved. If you’re interested in participating, now is the time to contact a local farm. Shares are generally sold January through March.

Giveaway: Are You Lucky?

Luck. What is it exactly? It’s hard to define because it’s an awfully abstract and illusive idea, and yet, most of us agree that it exists. It seems to be that extra something that makes or breaks a certain situation, for better or worse. Of course, the idea of luck gets a lot of playing time in March, but today I want to start a conversation. Tell me, do you consider yourself lucky or unlucky? And is that because of a string of experiences or only one in particular? And if you are lucky, why do you think that is?
