Party Planning 101

You want to host a party, but you have no idea where to begin. Hosting isn’t difficult once you nail down a few simple tricks. Here are my tried-and-true tips for pulling together any party, from a simple dinner with a couple of friends to a crowded-house holiday bash.

1. Make a to-do list in three categories: the food, the location, and the guests. Write down everything you need to purchase, prepare, or plan in each of the categories. Take a good look over your lists and then ask yourself where you can scale back. Can you use decorations you already have instead of purchasing something new? Can you send out e-vites instead of snail mail invites? Can you plan a menu that can be made ahead of time? You’ll enjoy yourself so much more if you keep things simple. Remember, this is Party Planning 101, not Themed Extravaganzas 1480.

2. Create a time frame. Next to each item on your list, decide when each item should be completed—one week before, three days before, an hour before, etc. By breaking the list down this way, you’re creating a chronological to-do list that you can transfer to your calendar. You’ll also recognize any red flags, like if you’ve planned to pick up the rolls from the bakery the same day your husband has scheduled to have your car in the shop for an oil change.

3. On the day of the party, give yourself plenty of time to prepare so that you aren’t rushing around as guests arrive. There are always a few inevitable hiccups, so plan some extra time to be truly prepared. Spend the quiet moments before guests arrive doing something relaxing, like listening to soft music or sipping something delicious. You’ll tap into your hosting zen and be party-ready when the doorbell rings.

4. Say yes to help. Doing everything by yourself may seem simpler at times, but trust me—people want to help and you’re better off letting them. If someone offers to bring food, run an errand, or simply chop celery for a vegetable tray with you, let go of a little control and let them. You’ll both enjoy the party more if you say yes.

5. Assign a photographer. Ask one of your guests to take snapshots during the party. Hand them your camera and ask for a little documentation. You’ll end up with some great photographic memories at the end of the night, something you wouldn’t have time to do yourself as you take care off all the other details during the party. However, be sure to get a shot of your photographer before you hand the camera over!

6. Enjoy the moment. Sure, it sounds cliché, but it’s true. A party is a celebration with people you love to be with. It’s not about your coordinating napkins and tablecloths, or even the outfit you’re wearing; it’s about being together, so relax and enjoy yourself. After all, it’s a party!

Activities for a Holiday Houseful

If you’re hosting a houseful for the holidays, you’re probably planning all the details like extra towels and pillows, but have you taken time to think about entertainment? Be sure to relax from your hosting duties a little and enjoy yourself with some of these activities perfectly geared for your holiday crowd.

1. Play Minute To Win It. Using stuff you can find around the house and a stopwatch, play Minute To Win It games like picking up paper bags with only your mouth or stack three golf balls on top of each other. Be prepared for hours of howling laughter. Find more party ideas here on the official site.

2. Watch old family movies. When is the last time you pulled out all the old family home movies? Break out the movie projector or the VCR, dust them off, and enjoy a walk down memory lane. Everybody will love it.

3. Have a taste test. Purchase four or five different brands of chocolate bars or microwave popcorn or root beer and conduct a blind taste test. Give everyone a sample of each and have them score their tastes. Gather the scores and declare a winner in each category.

4. Have an indoor snowball fight. Purchase an inexpensive ream of white butcher paper and count off into two teams. Each team gets half the ream of paper and 20 minutes to tear it apart and make it into snowballs. Once time is up, let the snowball fight begin!

5. Build forts. There’s no better way to get in touch with your inner child or the children in your home than with good old-fashioned fort building. Gather blankets, chairs and flashlights and build a temporary home for the youngsters (and the young-at-heart).

6. Roast marshmallows. Gather around the fireplace or even a few candles and roast marshmallows together. Plop them into a steaming cup of hot cocoa for even more fun.

7. Go caroling. A houseful of guests makes a perfect choir. Grab your coat, hats, and singing voices and stroll the neighborhood singing your favorite Christmas carols. Can’t carry a tune? Then carry your stereo and play it louder than your voice.

8. Have a movie clip party. This is a fun one for everyone in the house. Gather your crowd together and using a laptop or iPad or even a fancy cell phone, give everyone a turn to share their favorite movie scenes via YouTube.

9. Have a generational dance off. Pit young against old with a dance off. Teach each other dances from the respective generations and have a dance off. Teams vote players off one by one until only one dancer is standing and declared the winner.

10. Build candy cars. Using Twinkies, frosting, and handfuls of various candies, have your crowd build individual holiday cars. It’s a fun alternative to gingerbread houses that you can display or have for dessert.

Most of all, remember to take a moment to enjoy being together. That’s what the holidays are all about.

Recipe: Iced Orange Cookies

MF Iced Orange Cookies II
Something about the holidays always makes me crave citrus. I love having a huge bowl of oranges, lemons, and limes in the kitchen during those cold winter months. The sight of them reminds me of summer, and their smell and flavor adds a light, tart contrast to all the heavy, rich foods of the season. That’s why this recipe is an absolute favorite of mine to make during the holidays. I especially like to make these for a Cookie Exchange party because they are such a unique contrast to all the other traditional flavors and colors. They are so delicate and citrus-y, you’ll fall in love at first bite. I wish you could reach through the computer screen to try one, but I guess you’ll just have to make a batch for yourself.

Iced Orange Cookies

2 1/2 cups flour
1 1/2 cups sugar
1 cup unsalted butter, softened
2 eggs
1 tablespoon grated orange peel
1 tablespoon fresh orange juice
1 1/2 teaspoons cream of tartar
1 teaspoon baking soda
1/4 teaspoon salt

Icing
3 cups powdered sugar
1/4 cup fresh orange juice
1 tablespoon grated orange peel
Dash of ground ginger

Directions
Preheat oven to 400 degrees. In a large mixing bowl, mix butter and sugar together until creamy. Add eggs, orange peel, and juice and mix until well combined. Add in the remaining dry ingredients and mix well. Drop rounded teaspoons onto an ungreased cookie sheet. Bake for 6-8 minutes, or until lightly browned. In another mixing bowl, whisk all icing ingredients together until smooth. Cool cookies before icing.

HINT: Substitute lemon zest/peel and lemon juice for the orange counterparts in this recipe for an equally stunning cookie!

Giveaway: Share Your Funniest Sledding Stories

Ultimate Nordic Snowman

Ultimate Nordic Snowman

What is it about a fresh snowfall that makes us want to bundle up, grab a thin piece of plastic, and hurl ourselves down the largest hill we can find?

Today I’m looking for your favorite funny sledding stories in exchange for an unbelievable prize, valued at over $175. Tell me about the time Uncle Bob slid down the hill, across the street, and straight into the neighbor’s front door. Or the time you and your college roommates decided to see if you could fit four people on a sled and learned the hard way that you can’t. Or, maybe the time your kids thought it would be funny to send the family dog down the hill on a sled wearing only a bike helmet and a look of betrayal.

The prize we’re giving away is our 26-inch tall Ultimate Nordic Snowman, absolutely chock full of our amazing cookies, brownies, popcorn, nuts, candy, and hot cocoa—the perfect refreshments after a day out in the snow. It also makes a fabulous and formidable holiday decoration for years to come.

Let the stories roll in! (Or, slide in, as the case may be.)

Comments accepted until midnight, December 13, 2010. One entry per person, please. Winner will be chosen randomly and notified via email.

Season’s Greetings for a Small Budget

A down economy is a reality we’re all dealing with but that doesn’t have to squelch your holiday cheer, especially if you’re a business owner. If you don’t have the budget to share a traditional holiday gift with your valued clients and colleagues, here are a few amazing outside-the-box ideas to try instead.

Discounts, coupons, or special offers. Maybe you can’t shell out the money for a gift, but what about using what you already have as a gift? Can you offer a special discount or coupon for your products or services? Send it in an email with a personal holiday greeting from you. Remember, it’s a down economy for everyone, which means everyone will appreciate getting a good deal.

Barter and trade. Think about your customer list. Is there someone you know that owns a restaurant, a bakery, or a even a farm? Approach them about trading products or services for the holidays. Chances are, they’re in the same boat as you. See what you can come up with together. You might be the answer to each other’s prayers!

Host a free concert. Ask a local school or church choir to come and perform at your place of business and invite your clients and colleagues to attend. Or, ask a talented friend to accompany your party for a holiday sing-in of favorite carols. You’ll have a great time spreading holiday cheer, and you won’t have to spend much, if anything at all.

Sponsor a contest. Instead of trying to purchase individual gifts for your entire list, why not purchase one grand prize and create a contest? You could have people submit photos of their ugliest holiday sweater (and we all know how stiff the competition can get in that category) or have them submit their favorite holiday memory. They’ll have a great time competing for the prize and you’ll have a great time reviewing the entries, which you can even display in your place of business. To be fair, choose your winner randomly.

Reach out and reconnect. Never underestimate the power of a personal connection. Yes, a gift is nice, but it’s the message of the gift that matters most—what you’re really saying is I value our relationship. If you can’t convey that message with material means, send a card to say it or even pick up the phone. Let your clients and colleagues know exactly what they mean to you. You’ll be amazed at how much it will mean to both of you.

If you have other big ideas for a small budget, share them in the comments section.

Recipe: Chocolate Marshmallow Clouds

MF Chocolate Marshmallow Clouds
It’s December, the month of pleasant surprises. Of course, some of the surprises will come on the 25th, but you don’t have to wait that long to have this special treat–a fudgey cookie with a toasted marshmallow inside. Mmm!

This recipe is perfect for your Christmas Cookie Exchange parties or just a night in with a cup of hot cocoa and a holiday movie. The most important thing to remember on this recipe, however, is to thoroughly freeze your marshmallows before you begin. It makes all the difference because it keeps the marshmallows from cooking too fast. They’ll stay fluffy and white, like dreamy clouds in your chocolate-y cookies.

Surprise someone you love with this delicious cookie. I promise they’ll love it.

Chocolate Marshmallow Clouds

3 cups flour
2/3 unsweetened cocoa powder
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1 cup sugar
1 cup brown sugar, packed
1 cup salted butter, softened
2 eggs
2 teaspoons vanilla
2 cups miniature chocolate chips
8 ounces miniature marshmallows, frozen

Directions
Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Until you are ready to assemble the cookies just prior to baking, keep the marshmallows in the freezer—otherwise they will thaw too rapidly. In a medium bowl combine flour, cocoa, and baking soda. Set aside. Combine sugars in a large bowl. Using an electric mixer, blend in butter until creamy. Add eggs and vanilla, and beat at medium speed until light and fluffy. Add the flour mixture and chocolate chips and blend at low speed until combined. Batter will be very stiff.

Gather 4 or 5 frozen marshmallows in the palm of your hand and cover them with a heaping tablespoon of dough. Wrap the dough around the marshmallows, completely encasing them and forming a 2-inch diameter dough ball. Place balls on ungreased baking sheets, 2 inches apart. Bake 10-12 minutes. Cool on pan for 2 minutes, then transfer to a cool, flat surface.

May the be one of many pleasant surprises for you this month!
